2022 Spring Garden Tasks

It’s time to layout what I need to do in all the different areas of the yard. This year I did not start any seeds in the house. No tomatoes, no peppers, no flowers of any kind. Let’s see what trouble I can get into while needing to go to the plant store!

Garage Garden

This is the newest garden. It’s filled with tulips, roses, and irises.

  • Weed, weed, and weed. Never ending weeding.
  • Trim/deadhead the tulips. Leave the greenery. Already started.
  • Fix the path – need to put down something so that it’s not so muddy all the time.
  • Planted the dahlia bulbs.
  • Planted the creeping phlox.
  • Setup stakes for the peach tree.
  • Add mulch where needed.
  • Fertilize the roses – need to get on a 2 week schedule.
  • Determine if olive tree survived. Not real hopeful.

Oz Garden

Year 2 with this garden. The tulips came back and the irises are amazing – most more than doubled in plant size and some of the blooms have been more profuse than I’ve ever had in a garden.

  • Deadhead tulips. Already started.
  • Pull out nuthatch and other weeds – another never ending weed patch. Good thing all of the other plants sort of hide the weeds.
  • Move the planters out of the garden
  • Remove the old dogwood and plant the new one (it’s in one of the pots). The old dogwood is starting to grow from the roots. Will keep for now and see if it can be trained into a tree or if it will end up as a shrub. Either will be nice.
  • Make sure the roses have enough airflow. That’s going to be difficult with all of the iris growing so thick.
  • Fertilize the roses – get on a 2 week schedule

Front Porch Garden

  • Trim pugster butterfly bush that has a broken limb
  • Fertilize the iris plants and maybe the bulbs.
  • Not much else to do with this self-sustained garden.

Flag Garden

  • Clean out dead leaves.
  • Weed.
  • Dig up a Dragon Arum for Jenny – put it in a pot.
  • Move one of the roses maybe.
  • Fertilize the roses.

Vegetable Garden

  • Turn under cover crops
  • Pull up the soaker hose
  • Add compost from Howard County dump
  • Till
  • Buy tomato and pepper plants
  • Remove planters and see if any of the herbs are still growing
  • Buy herb plants
  • Plant tomatoes, peppers, cucumber seeds, bean seeds.

Shade Garden

  • Weed out the grass clumps.
  • Cut back some of the daffodils so that the other plants (hellebores) can get a little light.
  • Check if it needs mulch.
  • Fertilize the hostas.

Trees

  • Decide if I want to dig up the weeping cherry tree. The weeping part was graphed onto a tree base. The weeping part has died but the base tree is pushing leaves. Since I’m not sure what the base tree is, I may remove it before it roots in too well.
  • Check on Eastern Red Bud. It looks good. Research if I need to mulch and fertilize since it’s only year 2.
  • Plant magnolia tree. Or leave it potted until it gets bigger? It’s just under a foot tall. May want a little more growth so it doesn’t get mowed over.

Well Garden

  • I’m not sure what to do with this. I think I’ll remove the tulips and daffodils.
  • A lot of weeds are taking over.
  • Fertilize the roses – get on 2 week schedule.

Deck Garden

  • Remove rose stump – need help doing this. Think I’ll wait until fall when everything dies back. There may be too much growth going on.
  • Deadhead the daffodils and hyacinths.
  • Move the 1 dwarf iris. Not sure where it came from, but it’s not in the best place. It won’t get much light.

Back Porch Garden

Not much to with this one. Already weeded and pretty much self-sufficient.

Corner Garden

  • Trim Pope John Paul rose bush and fertilize
  • Weed.
  • Add plants.

Backdoor Garden

This is the garden under the window. Need to add plants and thickly mulch.

Jim’s Garden

Trim. We’re changing the fence so there may be some damage. Replace nandina if needed. Add marigolds and mulch.

Swale Garden

  • Rake out some of the leaves.
  • Remove some of the vines.

Patio

  • Remove rotten wood log.
  • Fertilize and/or replace the dirt in the grow bags.
  • Check the onions. Remove and prepare soil for something else.
  • Plant beans, carrots, radishes, and beets. See if there are any other root veggies I want to try.
  • Plant some of the tomato plants.
  • Paint the furniture.
  • Setup soaker hoses for the grow bags and planters.
