established 2013

This is the first flower bed that we tackled. We suspect this is where there was a well – we put down paver stones over where we think is the access point. We cleared it and found a tree root we couldn’t remove so we put a bird bath on top of it. We planted Mr Lincoln, Tropicana, Double Delight, and Peace rose bushes along with a couple of white heather bushes and ground cover (periwinkle and sedum).

There was a huge sycamore tree behind the house that shaded the garden. Only the Mr Lincoln rose we originally planted survived because lack of light. Once the tree was removed (because of the house renovations) I redesigned this garden. Three roses: the original Mr Lincoln, a white drift, and Tupelo Honey Heirloom Floribunda Rose. Kept the two white heather. Added daffodils, tulips, Itoh peonies, creeping phlox and a few lilies. I removed the periwinkle (as best as I could) and spiderwort.

The Mr Lincoln hybrid tea rose was one of the first roses we planted. It’s been struggling most of that time. 2020 has been its best year. The roses have been big and healthy and there have been more healthy looking leaves than previously.

I moved the white drift rose from the Deck Garden to here in 2019 because it was trying to take over. It’s doing the same in this garden, but it has the room.

The 3rd rose is a Tupelo Honey Heirloom Floribunda Rose planted in 2019 as a 4″ potted plant and grows to 4 feet tall by 3 feet wide at maturity. In 2020 it sure looks like it’s attempting to get there. It has an abundance of roses. Stunning plant.

One of the Itoh peony is being crowded out by the white drift rose, but that’s OK. I’ll keep pruning the rose bush in the winter and that should give the peony a chance to bloom in the spring before the rose goes crazy with blooms and growth.

The other peony had been stunted by the spiderwort. It probably needs another year to get its roots healthy before it blooms.

The daffodils and tulips really made an impact this year. Left the bulbs to see if they will continue next year.
