Journal Entry for

Sept 9, 2021

What an evening. Decided to do the fall seeds in the veggie garden and to test stuff. I divided the bed into 4 different areas.

Where I usually plant the tomatoes I put in a cover crop of Crimson Clover. I covered most of this with straw. I want to see if the soil gets more nitrogen naturally from the cover crop.

The new greenhouse that I got for Christmas 2020 is in the middle. I have the green netting on it now. I planted 5 rows of root vegetables covered with straw to aerate the soil.

  • Carrot Long Imperator
  • Detroit Red Beets
  • Purple Top White Turnips
  • Radish, Comet
  • 2nd row of Detroit Red Beets

The last 3rd of the garden is divided in 2. The left side I’ve left alone as a control. The right side I put down a heavy layer of straw. Want to see if it will repress all of the weeds and self-seeded marigolds.
