While I wondered if 2020 would ever end and when I could start my seeds for 2021, I kept busy with several projects, and that’s why this is a L O N Gpost. One of the silver-linings of telework was there was no travel time to and from work. More time to do my own stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to get back to going into work, safely, and resuming my train naps to and from work, but I sure did use that time doing stuff I like. I did a little sewing, some cross stitch and a whole bunch of landscaping. Below are little snippets of what I did and pictures.
Sewing Project
I was cleaning up and found a few old needlework pieces that my mom made that she intended to make into pillows. I asked dad for her sewing machine and decided to learn. The sewing machine hadn’t been used for over 10 years so needed some cleaning. I love YouTube!
Mom made this sand dollar design, and I just made the pillow
My 2nd attempt at a zipper. Not bad for a beginner.
Cross Stitch
I found this cool pillow in a antique store that I decided to remake. Then I found a cross stitch kit with a design to sort of match. They are both octagons so it’s going to be tricky to make them into pillows.
This is the one I bought at an antique store. Love that color blue.
Take a look at those stitches. Amazing work.
Here's the one I picked out about 3/4 of way complete.
Here it is completed. Seems a little "old lady" to me.
So I found this kit for a pillow and decided it's not too bad.
Custom Designs
I “discovered” this artist, Charley Harper, and have fallen in love with his work. The studio produces hand painted needlepoint canvases – very expensive. I have never worked on canvas for needlepoint. I considered it, but then decided to make my own design for a cross stitch pattern based off of his design “Wrented”. I’m not going to post the actual pattern, nor will I share it because I don’t know the copyright details on it. I’m making it for myself. The more to-the-point item is that I found I can possibly use my own artwork and make them into patterns. That’s going to be a later project.
Landscape Project
I didn’t get to play in my gardens, but I did get a chance for a lot of landscaping – in my husband’s train layout!
This has been really a lot of fun. I got to get messy with paper mache, paints, and all kinds of fun stuff. I made trees and buildings. I got to design the city and really put in a lot of work on the farm. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I guess I should make a video or two when the trains are running. He’s got 4 trains running.
The Town
We have the layout decided, now putting in the grass.
The downtown business are in. Working on the houses.
Completed landscaping for these little bungalows.
These people don’t like all the others walking through their yard on the way to church. Added a hedge.
The hospital is down the street from the church.

The Mountain
I didn’t get pictures of when I was building the base out of wire, wire mesh, and paper mache. I tore my hands up on that wire mesh!
Most of the stuff to build the mountain
Pine and blue spruce.
Making my own trees from twigs.
First coat of paint for the cliffs.
Last coat of paint for the cliffs.
The start of the river from the mountain.
I added rocks I found outside.
Painted the mountain green, then used a mixture of glue, water, and brown paint to coat with ground cover.
Just kept adding “stuff”.
From the farm-side of the layout.
Added trees and shrubs. Love those cliffs.
The portal from the farm side.
Overview of the tracks next to the mountain.
The Farms
Painted board with locations for the barns.
The side of the mountain.
The duck pond – used the same stuff as the river on the mountain.
Got the different “grasses” down to give different textures.
A little dirt road.
All of the building are in.
The mountain in the background.
Adding the animals.
From the cows viewpoint.
Just want to sit down next to the pond.
Hope no foxes get at the chickens at the coup.
A view from the porch.
A look down from the mountain.
The Crops and Greenhouse
This is my favorite part of the layout – the crops and the greenhouse.
Getting the crops ready to plant. Here’s the corn.
Pumpkins, tomatoes, and hay bales.
I worked my way around the board and have an RV site.
